In an effort to institutionalize its overarching goal to promote responsible mining in the region, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. 08 conducted a capacity building seminar to the small-scale miners producers association in Brgy. Pinut-an, San Ricardo, Southern, Leyte on September 15, 2022.
The core of the seminar was the presentation on R.A. 7076 also known as People’s Small-Scale Mining Act of 1991. It was mainly intended to inform and update the association of the status of its Minahang Bayan area and the recent mining policies as well as to provide guidance on the creation of the small-scale miners association.
During the said seminar, the attendees together with the Barangay Officials strongly shared their desire to form the association in order to legalize their operations, stressing that they heavily rely on mining for their daily sustenance.
Engr. Wendell Gador of MGB-08 stressed that the Office will be extending its full support and assistance in the creation of the association to enable the small-scale miners to operate legally and protect the mineral resources within their jurisdiction and to a greater extent, contribute to the nation’s economic growth.
Other topics discussed during the seminar included Batas Pambansa Blg. 265 and the penal provisions under RA 7942.
It was held at the Barangay Hall of Brgy. Pinut-an, San Ricardo, Southern Leyte and was attended by about 50 residents including the barangay officials headed by Hon. Faustino Celerio Jr.
Resource persons during the seminar were Engr. Wendell S. Gador, Engineer IV, Engr. Francis L. Combinido, Engineer III, PENRO-So. Leyte Embedded Personnel, Engr. Miria Lorraine Simon and PENRMO So. Leyte representative John Michael Laviña.
