As an offshoot of the agreements during the courtesy call of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. VIII (MGB RO8) headed by Regional Director Carlos A. Tayag with the Bishop of the Diocese of Borongan Most. Rev. Crispin B. Varquez, DD on June 22, 2022 at the Bishop’s Residence in Borongan City, a mine site visit to Emir Mineral Resources Corporation (EMRC) in Homonhon Island was conducted on September 6, 2022.
The said visit was highly participated by MGB-08 RD Carlos Tayag and some technical employees, DENR Regional Executive Director Arturo E. Fadriquela, EMB-08 Regional Director Martin Jose Despi, CENRO Borongan Eugene Mozo, together with Bishop Crispin B. Varquez, Fr. James Abella of the Diocesan Social Action Center, Fr. Jonathan Pading of Homohon Island, Esayra S. Abucejo of Caritas Borongan Inc. and representatives of Philippine Misereor Partnership Inc. (PMPI).
The site visit was highlighted by various activities such as, coordination meeting with the Parish Church of Homonhon Island headed by its parish priest, Fr. Jonathan Pading; briefing and levelling off on the Mine Operations and Rehabilitation Plans of Emir Mineral Resources Corporation (EMRC), followed by an open forum on the issues and concerns related to mining activities on the area; and lastly, the actual mine site visit to the company’s mining area, progressive rehabilitation area and causeway.
Drone survey and photo documentations of the actual mine operations and mining areas of EMRC were done by both the religious sector and the EMRC.
RD Tayag stressed that the site visit was in keeping with MGB’s commitment to show transparency and likewise ensure the implementation of responsible mining in the mining operations in the region.
