With the end-in-view of strengthening its call to promote responsible mining in the region, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. 08 launched its #MineResponsibility campaign with the theme “Know MINE, Know LIFE:” Elevating the Mission of Responsible Mining in Eastern Visayas at Haiyan Hotel and Resort on August 19, 2022.

The launch was sought to inform all stakeholders about the updates of the mining industry in the region, inform the general public about mining and its benefits and most importantly, to address the misconceptions about the mining industry.

The #MineResponsibility campaign is anchored on the principle of stakeholdership that involves not only a few, but, a collective spirit and shared accountability among state agencies, mining firms, host communities and the general public. It highlights the message that all stakeholders – from users, companies, beneficiaries, communities and citizens have a stake and a responsibility to watch over the mining industry and the environment.

RD Carlos Tayag in his message emphasized that through the #MineResponsibility campaign, MGB-08 intends to show its commitment to ensure responsible mining in Eastern Visayas. He likewise encouraged permit holders to be responsible operators and to always give due regard to environmental protection.

RD Tayag also mentioned that the faithful compliance of permit holders with their responsibilities in accordance with the laws and regulations is one way they can show responsible mining on their part.

He added that the permit holders must likewise endeavour to pursue activities that will create more impact and sustainability as laid out in the National Unified Information Education and Communication Program (NUIECP) for Responsible Mining.

Meanwhile, DENR-08 Regional Executive Director Arturo Fadriquela commended MGB-08 for organizing such an important forum that brings together all key mining stakeholders and serve as an avenue to discuss and agree on certain policies, issues and concerns in the mining industry.

The morning forum of the #MineResponsibility campaign highlighted various presentations from MGB-08 pertaining to relevant policy matters, programs and activities in support to #MineResponsibility campaign and updates on mining operations in the region. The afternoon forum, on the other hand, showed the best practices in elevating the nationwide mission of responsible mining as presented by the mining companies operating in the region.

A presentation of videos/documentary films entitled, “Kutsara” (infomercial), “Minsan Kitang Minahan” (online ad) and “Biyaya ng Lupa” – all showing the importance and the role that mining play especially in the modern times and with the advent of modern technology also highlighted the #MineResponsibility campaign launch.

At the end, the participants were left with the message that the responsibility to watch over the mining industry and the environment highly involves the active involvement of all stakeholders as users, companies, beneficiaries, communities and citizens.
