The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. VIII (MGB RO8) headed by Regional Director Carlos A. Tayag met with the Bishop of the Diocese of Borongan Most. Rev. Crispin B. Varquez, DD on June 22, 2022, at the Bishop’s Residence in Borongan City.

The closed-door meeting was intended to discuss several issues and concerns relative to the mining operations in Manicani and Homonhon Islands within the municipality of Guiuan, Eastern Samar. One of such concerns raised by Bishop Varquez in a letter to President Rodrigo Duterte which was likewise forwarded to MGB-08 through MGB CO Director Atty. Wilfredo Moncano, pertained to the granting of extension of the Mineral Production Sharing Agreement and the permission to resume mining operations of Hinatuan Mining Corporation in Manicani Island.

RD Tayag for his part vowed to take actions on the concerns raised by Bishop Varquez particularly, the consistent monitoring of mining operations within the jurisdiction of Guiuan, Eastern Samar. He emphasized that he will strongly push for the imposition of penalties that may also warrant the suspension and/or cancellation of permits for any serious violations committed by mining permit holders and operators.

Bishop Varquez also called on the support of MGB and other DENR officials to strongly implement responsible mining as enshrined in the Mining laws and regulations and to ensure that such operations will translate into inclusive growth and progress especially for the host and neighboring communities.

The meeting was also attended by CENRO-Borongan Eugene Mozo and staff, Caritas Borongan Deputy Director Mario Ian Mosquisa, Caritas Borongan Director Fr. James Abella, Engr. Margarito Jerry Barreto and Atty. Christian Gilbert Dado of MGB-08.
