In view of the several opposition from various groups on the operations of MacArthur Iron Projects Corp. (MIPC) in MacArthur, Leyte and in an effort to thresh out issues that need updating and clarification, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau RO VIII represented by Regional Director Leo Van Juguan, appeared before SP-Leyte during its Committee Hearing at the Provincial Capitol Legislative Building on February 11, 2021.

RD Leo Van Juguan gave a presentation detailing updates on the operations of MIPC, particularly on the rehabilitation activities, shipment of magnetite sand as well as issues and concerns received and responded to by the Office.

MIPC likewise gave a presentation highlighting the legalities of their operations; community-assistance projects and activities as well as issues and concerns addressed.

Meanwhile, Fr. Amadeo Alvero, Parish Priest of St. Isidore Parish, MacArthur, Leyte, shared that his group will continue to advocate for the protection of MacArthur, Leyte mainly because it is a prime agricultural land and that the future of the next generations is of great importance to them.

BM Mesias Arevalo, Chairperson, Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, mentioned that the Committee will study the documents presented to them by all parties involved and decide based on careful thought and deliberation.

Vice-Governor Atty. Carlo P. Loreto emphasized that SP-Leyte is all for the protection of the environment. However, he further stressed that, protecting the environment does not really equate to not being able to utilize the resources we are blessed with. He added that while climate change is the core of government advocacies, progress and development can be achieved simultaneously with it.
