The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office VIII is set to conduct geological, geochemical and geohazard survey of five (5) major river systems in the region which will be covered in the potential dredging activities of heavily silted river channels pursuant to the DENR Administrative Order No. 2020-07 dated February 27, 2020,

The said Administrative Order pursuant to DENR-DPWH-DILG-DOTR Joint Memorandum Circular No. 01 Series of 2019 sought to protect and properly manage the disposition of sand as well as restore the natural state and water flow of the heavily-silted river channels in the country.

The five (5) major river systems identified by MGB RO-8 are Panilahan River in Ormoc City (resource assessment), Salug River in Hilongos and Hindang, Leyte, Himbangan River in St. Bernard, Southern, Leyte, Hibatang River in Calbayog City and Balangiga River in Balangiga, Eastern Samar.

The ground verification by a team of geologists of this Office will be conducted starting on July 15 to November 22, 2020.

The identification, selection and delineation of the said rivers were based from the Google Earth images, NAMRIA 1:50,000 scale topographic maps, and the type of lithology derived from the regional geologic map.
