The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. 8 took due notice of mining companies which positively responded to the call of the government to assist host and neighboring communities in view of the pandemic due to Covid-19.
Pursuant to Republic Act No. 11469 or the “Bayanihan to Heal as One Act”, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), in Memoranda dated March 27, 2020 and April 1, 2020, authorized the MGB Regional Offices to allow the mining companies to re-align the unutilized funds of the Social Development and Management Program (SDMP) to assist their host and neighbouring communities, as well as the non-impact barangays in their respective localities, during the implementation of enhanced community quarantine until the threat of COVID-19 is gone.
Thus, through their SDMPs, mining contractors and Industrial Sand and Gravel Permit Holders within Region VIII extended their assistance to their host and neighboring communities by giving food packs (i.e. rice, pack lunch, etc.), medical supplies/kits as well as cash assistance which totalled PhP8,365,129.7 by far, since April 8, 2020 to date.
