With the current Covid-19 crisis, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. 8, in the spirit of bayanihan, compassion and solidarity initiated relief assistance efforts by providing food packs to 250 pedicab and motorcycle drivers and other frontliners performing essential tasks in the different barangays within the municipality of Palo, Leyte on April 24, 2020.

The said beneficiaries, being low-income earners and left with no choice but to continue working despite the Covid-threat to provide food at their tables, were given food packs intended to cover at least three meals for a day or two.  Also as support to local farmers, the Office purchased farm products produced locally for the said food packs. Each food pack contained a various mix of vegetables which include squash, eggplant, string beans, cucumber as well as sweet corn, camote and dried fish.

“During these difficult times, we wanted to show that we are one with the plight of those who need most in life. We want to show that we care. Hence, through our little assistance, we hope we can somehow offer relief and comfort to our beneficiaries,” said RD Leo Van Juguan.

The Office also distributed locally handmade washable face masks to the said beneficiaries.
