The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. 8 (MGB 8) attended the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Training for LGU Baybay City last June 4, 2022, at the Research, Development, and Extension (RDE) Hall, Visayas State University, Baybay City, Leyte.

In response to the invitation letter of the Philippine KOICA Fellows Association (PHILKOFA), an alumni organization of the participants to academic and training courses, workshops, seminars, and other activities sponsored by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in the Republic of Korea, MGB 8 attended as one of the resource persons in the DRRM Training for LGU Baybay City.

The said activity was conducted to strengthen disaster awareness and preparedness in disaster-prone provinces – a program that is aligned with KOICA’s priority agenda on Disaster Risk-Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation (DRR-CCA). It was attended by barangay officials in hazard prone areas, as well as several departments from LGU Baybay City, and personnel from Visayas State University. During the one-day program, various experts and professionals from different national government agencies, as well academic institutions, were present as speakers. For the said program, Rodrigo Jay B. Miralles (Senior Geologist, MGB 8) discussed “Rain-induced Landslides and Preparedness Measures.” Emphasis was given to the identification of surface manifestations for ground movement. This could greatly help barangay officials and residents in identifying possible landslide areas.

Apart from MGB, other national government agencies were also present during the training, such as the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) agencies Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). The Office of Civil Defense Region 8 was also present to give talks on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management.
