The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. 8 (MGB RO VIII) has been recognized for its invaluable contribution during the response for Tropical Cyclones “Agaton” and “Odette.”

On May 14, 2022, the Office of Civil Defense VIII (OCD VIII) and the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council VIII (RDRRMC VIII) hosted the “Gabi ng Pagpupugay: A Night of Heroes” at the Matapat Hall, Police Regional Office No. 8, Palo, Leyte. The said event was initiated to recognize the efforts of the different national government agencies, local government units, as well as non-government organizations, during the Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Operations for Tropical Cyclones “Agaton” and “Odette.”

During the Welcome Message of Director Lord Byron P. Torrecarion, Chairperson of RDRRMC VIII and Regional Director of OCD VIII, he mentioned how the region has been consecutively hit by two destructive tropical cyclones – “Odette” which heavily affected the Province of Southern Leyte in December 2021, and Tropical Cyclone “Agaton” which caused destructive landslides in Baybay City and Abuyog, Leyte within the month of April 2022. But in the darkest of times, the “bayanihan” spirit lives on. Concerted efforts between the RDRRMC VIII members, national government agencies as well as local government units and non-government organizations, were in full force to respond to the challenges brought by the tropical cyclones. This has been the inspiration behind the recognition, to give credit to whom credit is due.

The Plaque of Appreciation was received by MGB RO VIII Regional Director, Carlos A. Tayag. Aside from MGB RO VIII, other national government agencies, local government units and non-government organizations were also recognized for their contributions during the Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Operations for Tropical Cyclones “Agaton” and “Odette.”
