March 16, 2020

As another year starts for the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. 8, the Geosciences Division have started to implement its projects for calendar year 2020.

In line with the Geological Risk Reduction and Resiliency Program, the division has lined up year-round activities towards the program’s objects. These activities are the Groundwater Resource and Vulnerability Assessment (GRVA), Vulnerability and Risk Assessment (VRA), Updating of 1:10,000 scale Geohazard Maps, Information, Education and Communication Campaign on Vulnerability and Risk Assessment (IEC-VRA), Geologic Quadrangle Mapping, Karst Subsidence Hazard Assessment and Coastal Vulnerability Assessment and Mapping.

For the Groundwater Resource and Vulnerability Assessment (GRA), the project will focus on four municipalities in the Province of Leyte (Calubian, San Isidro, Tabango and Villaba). The team has already been deployed to Calubian, Leyte last February, and is currently working on the maps and reports.

The Vulnerability and Risk Assessment (VRA) and Updating of 1:10,000 scale Geohazard Maps will be conducted to ten municipalities in Northern Samar. These are the municipalities of Victoria

Allen, Lavezares, Rosario, San Jose, Bobon, Mondragon, San Roque, Pambujan and Catubig. The VRA teams have already been deployed to Bobon, Mondragon and San Roque, and are currently doing the field activities for the project.

For the Information, Education and Communication Campaign on Vulnerability and Risk Assessment (IEC-VRA), this year’s activities will focus on the municipalities where the VRA and updating of the 1:10,000 scale Geohazard Maps project was implemented back in the year 2018. A total of 12 municipalities are slated for the one-day training-workshop, all of which are in the Province of Southern Leyte. These are the municipalities of St. Bernard, San Juan, Malitbog, Liloan, San Francisco, Limasawa, San Ricardo, Libagon, Bontoc, Tomas Oppus, Padre Burgos and Pintuyan. As of writing, the IEC-VRA team has just finished conducting the one-day training-workshop in the municipalities of Pintuyan and San Ricardo.

The Geologic Quadrangle Mapping project will cover three quadrangles in the region: Sogod, Bato and Hilongos. All quadrangles are located on the southern portion of the Leyte Island. Quadrangle mapping activities are underway in the Sogod Quadrangle.

The Karst Subsidence Hazard Assessment, which focuses on sinkhole inventory and subsidence hazard assessment, will be conducted in Salcedo, Eastern Samar. The fieldwork is slated to be conducted on the month of April.

This year’s Coastal Vulnerability Assessment and Mapping will be conducted in Jiabong and Motiong, Samar. It will be a year-round assessment for the coastal erosion and accretion prone areas in the municipalities.
