In line with the program of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) on Recognizing Individuals and Institutions towards Vibrant and Enhanced Rivers (RIVERS) for Life which seeks to award the best rehabilitated and most improved water quality from the country’s class 3 rivers on June 2019, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office facilitated a series of Information Education and Communication (IEC) campaign on Geohazards along River Systems in Calbayog City in support to the said program.

The said IEC campaigns were attended by residents and some barangay officials from the nine (9) barangays comprising the Calbayog River Systems as follows: Brgys. Nijaga, Hamorawon and Dagum, Dagum, Payahan and Carmen, Capoocan, Obrero and Aguit-itan.

The presentations mainly emphasized the important aspects of hazard as well as the different manifestations of geohazards. Among the geohazards discussed and explained are the characteristics of natural hazards like landslide, flooding and earthquake.

Geologist Enna Marie Ambe emphasized in her lecture that the awareness and preparedness of each one on climate change adaptation and mitigation is important in response to the zero casualty goal when disasters happen. She added that the best time to prepare for disasters must always be ahead of time.

Likewise, during the Exit Conference of the joint week-long activities of the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) and MGB, Regional Director Leo Van Juguan presented geohazard maps particularly to the LGU officials and explained to them the importance of properly incorporating said maps in their DRR module and Comprehensive Land Use Plan and likewise increase public awareness and response on geohazards.
