The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. 8 participated in a Roundtable Discussion on Responsible Sand and Gravel Operations in Eastern Visayas initiated by the Visayas State University (VSU) at the Institute for Strategic Research and Development Studies (ISRDS) Training Room on February 27, 2019.
The Forum was aimed to identify the issues and concerns of the various stakeholders engaged in sand and gravel operations in Eastern Visayas, obtain stakeholders’ perspectives on what constitutes responsible mining and to provide a safe space for all stakeholders to discuss the concept of responsible sand and gravel operations.
In the said Forum, representatives of MGB-08 thru Engrs. Romely Rimban and Melvin Melgazo presented the laws and policies governing sand and gravel operations in the country. Other discussants included Mr. Gerardo Avorque, Provincial Treasurer of the Province of Leyte, Mr. Dennis Monterde of Concrete Solutions Inc., who represented the SAG industry and Mr. Dominador Lumba, President of Mahayag Farmers and Irrigators Association of Albuera, Leyte.
During the open forum and workshop, topics discussed among others, were the following: elements and principles that govern responsible mining; monitoring commitments to responsible
mining; systems, mechanisms or structures that can be set in place to ensure/monitor commitment to responsible mining and the role of the mining industry, local government units, government agencies and civil society organizations in these systems; and issues in the SAG operations and its governance in Eastern Visayas.
